Beyond the Image
The world of health and fitness is sometimes misconceived as a place of ego and perfectionism at its peak. Often times, people cannot understand why this land of self-care is driven by images of women on the cover of magazines, posting transformation photos and flaunting themselves on a competition stage. What they do not realize is, they are allowing the more visual pieces to affect their perception on the true meaning of a life of love and respect for our bodies, mind and soul.
Different people have different personalities. Each of us driven by the things that best match our level of drive and persistence. We also have to take into account what is attainable and realistic for ourselves. It is no secret that entering a fitness competition or losing a large amount of weight will draw far more attention and visual transformation then that of completing a marathon or triathlon. This does not mean that either road is more acceptable, admirable or challenging. It just means that there are different paths and different ways to fulfill the desire to accomplish something new and make changes in our life.
Let’s talk about personalities for a moment. Understanding someone’s personality and character can better help you understand and appreciate a direction or path that a person might take. We will use ourselves as an example.
Prior to competing, neither one of us were overly into fitness, we dabbled in it and worked out when we felt like it, but all in all, we lacked a real solid commitment and goal. We both hit a point in our lives where we wanted something more but we wanted a place to put our energy and drive toward. Being we both love hair, makeup, dressing up, socializing, meeting new people and fashion, we were drawn to the thought of doing a bikini competition. Now, this does not mean that either of us were beyond excited to wear 5 ounces of clothing in front of hundreds of people, it just meant that this goal was relatable to our liking and we could imagine and see ourselves accomplishing this goal. It excited us, made our heart beat a little faster and we just knew that one day we would get there.
Think about the different people you know who have made life changes or transformed their bodies. What did they choose to do? How did they go about it? Do you feel it matched their personality and character? Does it really matter what type of images they post or where their images ended up? Or is it the person’s charisma and new attitude toward life that is apparent and so appealing?
It is really important that we take a moment to acknowledge those who are living out loud and have accomplished something they feel proud of. Before making a judgment on a before and after photo, a bikini competitor, a person showing off their workouts, someone selling a product that helped them and etc…. Remember, you don’t have to do what they have done or buy into what they offer, but allow them to just be in their moment and express themselves in their own realm.
We don’t know everyone’s story or where they were before. Give other’s the okay to be free in their thoughts and accomplishments and keep an open mind. You never know when you will wake up and be ready for something new and it might be because someone inspired you. Don’t let the misperception of perfection turn you off from what’s best for you. I think we can all agree that an active and healthy life style is an important goal in all of our lives. How someone chooses to get there is up to them. Find what fit’s you and give it a go! It might change your life.
